An American Werewolf in London movie poster

Director: John Landis
Screenplay: John Landis
Production: UK/USA
Year: 1981

Sub-genre tags: werewolf, supernatural, comedy, lycanthropy

Tagline: Beware the moon.

Logline: Whilst holidaying in England a young American man and his buddy are attacked by a werewolf and must deal with the consequences.

Core cast: David Naughton (David), Griffin Dunne (Jack), Jenny Agutter (Alex), John Woodvine (Dr. Hirsch)

Memorable moment: David’s extraordinary transformation scene while Blue Moon plays in the background.

Curious Fact: Special makeup effects designer Rick Baker won the first ever Academy Award of its kind.

Intensity levels:
Blood & gore: medium
Fear factor and/or frights: high
Likelihood of bad dreams (disturbing content): low

Horrorphile’s two cents: The whole movie plays with yankee vs. pom cultures and modern sensibilities vs. ancient superstitions superbly … The nightmarish imagery, suspense, and mise-en-scene is second to none.

Funnily enough I just caught the start of this a couple of weeks ago on Foxtel. The early scene in the pub still cracks me up. Really have to get this on DVD and watch it in its entirety again, it's been too many years.

Dave, this movie holds such a special place in my heart, one of those early heady "adult" VHS experiences (as I was a little too young to see it in the cinemas, a year later and I would have lied about my age and done it). It's such a deft blend of comedy and horror, and I'm not big on horror-comedy.

I always looked at this as a "feel good" horror movie if there is such a thing. Of course, Jenny Agutter made helped things along!
