Day of the Dead
September 2nd 2011 02:21
Director: George Romero
Screenplay: George Romero
Production: USA
Year: 1985
Sub-genre tags: zombies, Romero's Dead series, the undead
Logline: In an underground bunker a small team of scientists, facilitated by the aggressive military, try to deal with the overwhelming zombie problem that exists above ground.
Tagline: The darkest day of horror the world has ever known.
Core cast: Lori Cardille (Sarah), Terry Alexander (John), Joe Pilato (Rhodes), Jarlath Conroy (McDermott), Richard Liberty (Logan)
Memorable moment: Tom Savini's stunning special effects make-up design and set-pieces, including Captain Rhodes' rip-snorter of a demise ... "Choke on 'em! Choke on 'em!"
Curious Facts: The budget for Romero's original script was estimated at $US7 million, but he would only be given the money if he could film an R-rated film. He was told that if he went ahead and shot an unrated film with no limits on gore, the budget would be split in half to $3.5 million. Which it was. Despite it being a box-office failure it's gained a cult following over the last two decades, and the director himself has stated that he considers it his best film.
Intensity levels:
Blood & gore: high
Fear factor and/or frights: low
Likelihood of bad dreams (disturbing content): low
Horrorphile’s two cents: The acting [is] often overlooked by critics. The overall production is superbly realised, everything from Michael Gornick’s moody cinematography through to John Harrison’s solid synth score. But especially notable is Tom Savini’s special effects make-up, truly astonishing stuff. More than twenty years down the track and the prosthetic work is, without a doubt, far more convincing than any CGI effects.
