Halloween movie poster

Director: John Carpenter
Screenplay: John Carpenter & Debra Hill (originally titled The Babysitter Murders)
Production: USA
Year: 1978

Sub-genre tags: slasher, stalk’n’slash, slice’n’dice, boogeyman, serial killer

Tagline: The night he came home.

Logline: A psychopath escapes from a mental institution - with his doctor in pursuit - and returns to his hometown to wreak murderous havoc.

Core cast: Jamie Lee Curtis (Laurie), Donald Pleasence (Dr. Loomis), P.J. Soles (Lynda), Nancy Loomis (Annie), Nick Castle (The Shape)

Memorable moment: An injured Laurie leans in the bedroom doorway thinking she has finally killed Michael Myers, but behind her in the background "The Shape" sits up and slowly turns his mask-covered face toward her … it ain’t over yet!

Curious Fact: Shot in 21 days on a budget of $US320,000, half of which was spent on the Panavision Panaglide camera (the precursor to the Steadicam). The movie went on to make $US47 million at the box office, making it one of the most successful indie movies of all time.

Intensity levels:
Blood & gore: low
Fear factor and/or frights: high
Likelihood of bad dreams (disturbing content): high

Horrorphile’s two cents: Many of modern horror's cliches were etched in Halloween, including the tricks of audience manipulation, which were abused to the point of buffoonery in the countless slasher flicks that followed. Yet, there is something inherently “pure” and unbridled about the way it is presented in Halloween ... And of course, Carpenter's brilliant score.
