Hellraiser
September 5th 2011 01:15
Director: Clive Barker
Screenplay: Clive Barker (based on his novella The Hellbound Heart)
Production: USA
Year: 1987
Sub-genre tags: supernatural, demons
Logline: An unfaithful wife encounters the zombie of her dead lover, who's being chased by demons after he escaped from their sado-masochistic Hell.
Tagline: He'll tear your soul apart
Core cast: Ashley Laurence (Kirsty), Claire Higgins (Julia), Sean Chapman (Frank), Andrew Robinson (Larry), Doug Bradley (Pinhead, the lead Cenobite).
Memorable moment: "Jesus wept!" splutters Larry as the Cenobites work their hellish magic. And, of course, The Lament Configuration puzzle itself.
Curious Facts: Industrial band Coil originally did the soundtrack for this movie, but it was rejected by the studio. Clive Barker in defence of the original score, said, " Coil was the only group I've heard on disc whose records I've taken off because they made my bowels churn."
Intensity levels:
Blood & gore: high
Fear factor and/or frights: low
Likelihood of bad dreams (disturbing content): low
Horrorphile’s two cents: One of the most original horror movies of the 80s. What it lacks in high end special effects and performance it more than makes up for in sheer nightmarish gusto. Clive Barker’s debut directing job is a highly competent piece of work.
