Director: Pascal Laugier
Screenplay: Pascal Laugier
Production: France/Canada
Year: 2008
Sub-genre tags: revenge, supernatural, torture porn
Tagline: They did not finish to be alive ...
Logline: A young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, into a living hell, and a fate worse than death.
Core cast: Morjana Alaoui (Anna), Mylene Jampanoi (Lucie), Catherine Begin (Mademoiselle), Isabelle Chasse (The Creature), Xavier Dolan (Antoine)
Memorable moments The Creature's assault on Lucie, and the last ten minutes of the movie.
Curious Fact: Hollywood is producing a remake (due for release in 2013) which apparently will change the ending into an upbeat resolution (one of the American producers was quoted as saying he didn't want an ending that would make audiences want to commit suicide after watching), thus completely ruining the uncompromising intent - and essence - of the movie. The movie is dedicated to Dario Argento.
Intensity levels:
Blood & gore: high
Fear factor and/or frights: medium
Likelihood of bad dreams (disturbing content): high
Horrorphile’s two cents: The detached presentation of the movie’s second half is masterfully constructed, while the movie’s first half is brilliantly ferocious and at times utterly harrowing.
