MY ESSENTIAL CINEMA NIGHTMARE LIST IS COMPLETE!

I started Horror Horror for three reasons; one for curiosity) to see how quickly I could generate followers and subscribers on a new subsidiary site; two was academic) to provide information to those that are virginal or curious to the horror genre, so they may rent or purchase titles that are actually very good, and in most cases essential viewing, because as we know there is a hell of a lot of crap out there; and three) to indulge in my fetish for list making, in this case a selection of what I think are some of the essential cult/classic horror movies in history, forty-two to be precise.

So why forty-two? Well, originally the list was going to be ongoing, but a few weeks in I realised the criteria and template I had set didn’t have the longevity so I decided on limiting the list to fifty-two, as a reference to a weekly television show I grew up with called The Sunday Horrors; it would be a list where those keen enough could watch a horror movie every week for a year, and come out a True Believer, or maybe a gibbering psychological wreck. Either way, I’d be happy.

But to be brutally honest, I swiftly lost all motivation in the past couple of weeks, call it laziness, I don't care. So I’m calling it quits at forty-two. Which is quietly apt, as 42 is the age this Horrorphile currently resides at. It also happens to be the meaning of life, according to the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Rather ironic, I think.
Night of the Living Dead
Admittedly my selection leans heavily toward the modern horror movie, those made from the late 60s onwards, and of course there are plenty I haven’t included. There are no overt comedies, but a couple that twist the knife of black humour. A few directors get the privilege of having more than one entry, and no doubt there’ll be a few horrorphiles demanding to know why Lucio Fulci or A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) didn’t make the list.

My curiosity was ultimately killed as I’ve gained two followers in the nine months I’ve been posting, so the first reason for doing Horror Horror has proved to be almost entirely unsuccessful. As for the second; purely academic, so really it’s third reason that is most important, because now I have my list. And it’s a doozy, if I don’t mind saying so myself.

So here we are, at the end of my Horror Horror mission, it’s been fun, if a little anemic in the comments and followers department, now it’s time to shuffle back into the Horrorphile Darkness whose bloodletting provides me satiation.
Martyrs

Here then is the completed list arranged in order of year of release. Clicking on the title will take you through to my Horrorphile movie review. Not a shabby wee list if I might say so myself.
