The Blair Witch Project
August 9th 2011 07:39
Directors: Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sanchez
Screenplay: Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sanchez
Production: USA
Year: 1999
Sub-genre tags: found footage, mystery, witch, supernatural
Logline: In October of 1994 three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland, while shooting a documentary... A year later their footage was found.
Tagline: Everything you've heard is true
Core cast: Heather Donahue (Heather), Michael C. Williams (Mike), Joshua Leonard (Josh)
Memorable moment: Heather's early morning discovery of Josh's bloodied teeth wrapped in a bundle of twigs outside the tent ... and Josh missing.
Curious Facts: The actors were given no more than a 35-page outline of the mythology behind the plot before shooting began. All lines were improvised and nearly all the events in the film were unknown to the three actors beforehand, and were often on-camera surprises to them all. Virtually all the footage used in the movie was shot by the three actors (16mm and video)
Intensity levels:
Blood & gore: low
Fear factor and/or frights: high
Likelihood of bad dreams (disturbing content): high
Horrorphile’s two cents: An utterly original cult classic; yet an acquired taste. It has spawned more imitations and like-minded DIY horror flicks than you can shake an occult stick figure at, but none have come close to capturing the same creative farrago and intensely atmospheric, palpable unease.
