The Exorcist movie poster

Director: William Friedkin
Screenplay: William Peter Blatty (based on his own novel)
Production: USA
Year: 1973

Sub-genre tags: demonic possession, supernatural, blasphemy

Tagline: Something beyond comprehension is happening to a little girl on this street, in this house. A man has been called for as a last resort to try and save her. That man is The Exorcist.

Logline: Two priests come to the aid of a mother who's young daughter has become possessed by a powerful demon.

Core cast: Ellen Burstyn (Chris MacNeil), Linda Blair (Regan), Max Von Sydow (Father Merrin), Jason Miller (Father Karras), Lee J. Cobb (Lt. Kinderman), Mercedes McCambridge (voice of demon, Pazuzu)

Memorable moments: 12-year-old Regan, possessed by the demon, spouts numerous lines of foulness and blasphemy, such as "Stick your cock up her ass, you motherfucking worthless cocksucker!" and "Your mother sucks cocks in Hell, Karras, you faithless slime." She also masturbates with a crucifix whilst panting, "Let Jesus fuck you, let Jesus fuck you. Let him fuck you." And not forgetting her head turning 180 degrees, then projectile vomiting thick green sick.

Curious Facts: If adjusted for inflation this is Warner Brother's highest grossing movie and also the highest grossing "R" rated movie ever. Special effects makeup legend Dick Smith hired future SFX whizz Rick Baker as his assistant.

Intensity levels:
Blood & gore: low
Fear factor and/or frights: high
Likelihood of bad dreams (disturbing content): low

Horrorphile’s two cents: Regardless of whether you believe in demonic possession or not, The Exorcist is a great dramatic thriller with horror overtones. Friedkin presents the story in the most realistic way possible ... [it's] dated very well for the most part. Strong performances, some great use of imagery, especially in the Iraq prologue.
