The Innocents
July 19th 2011 23:06
Director: Jack Clayton
Screenplay: William Archibald and Truman Capote with John Mortimer (from the novel The Turn of the Screw by Henry James and the stage play adaptation The Innocents by John Mortimer)
Production: USA/UK
Year: 1961
Sub-genre tags: supernatural, ghosts, haunted house
Tagline: A strange new experience in shock.
Logline: A young governess for two children becomes convinced that the house and grounds are haunted.
Core cast: Deborah Kerr (Miss Giddens), Pamela Franklin (Flora), Martin Stephens (Miles), Peter Wyngarde (Quint), Clytie Jessop (Miss Jessel)
Memorable moment: When the spectre of Mr. Quint floats toward the window and peers in.
Curious Fact: At one point when Deborah Kerr's character wanders around the house at night with only a candelabra for illumination, the clapperboard briefly wanders into shot. Jack Clayton decided to keep it in because he liked the idea of something almost subliminal being present to add to the air of unease.
Intensity levels:
Blood & gore: low
Fear factor and/or frights: medium
Likelihood of bad dreams (disturbing content): medium
Horrorphile’s two cents: Jack Clayton’s direction is masterful, maintaining a visual elegance that steers into gothic territory, but equally impressive are the central performances he elicits from his three central acting charges.
